Examples of how to write a query:

 


Start with the surnames you are looking for in all caps. Define what it is you are looking for. Then make sure to include at least one date and place. Also include all the relationships that are know for the persons you are looking for. Do not forget to include your name, address either snail mail and or e-mail, phone and fax if you desire.

Example:

SPOHN, ANSPACH, SWINEHART Seek to find proof positive that Isabelle Spohn Swinehart b. 5 Sep 1830 Perry County, Ohio d. 8 Oct 1886 Richland Tp, Fairfield County, OH is the daughter of Jacob and Barbara (Anspach) Spohn. She married 16 Apr 1848 in Perry Co., OH to George Swinehart Jr. Her father, Jacob Spohn s/o Philip Spohn b: Abt 1793 Hagerstown, MD, d: 27 Dec 1849 Perry Co., OH of chlorea and left no will. Her mother, Barbara Rebecca Anspach d/o Johan Adam Anspach b: 08 Mar 1793 Berks Co., PA d: 31 Dec 1875 Reading, Perry, OH left no will either. Joel seems to be Isabelle's closest sibling as he and his family appear in many of the family reunion pictures. Does anyone out there have the family bible??? or any other proof???

You will notice in the example above that only the names that are directly connected to the subject of your query are capitalized and bolded. The query immediately states what is being sought. Whenever possible the dates are followed by a place and relationships are clearly stated. The purpose for writing the query is restated at the end. How to contact the the person who submitted the query is included at the end.

You may not have this much information so a second example is given below:

SPECHT, SCHWEINHART/SWEINHART/SWINEHART Seek information on the parents of Elizabeth Specht who married Andreas Schweinhart/Sweinhart/Swinehart s/o Jurg Micheal Schweinhart (immigrant) b. 1747 Berks Co, PA (which later became Montgomery Co, PA) circa 1760 in PA probably Montgomery or Berks County. You will notice in this second example much information is know about the family but very little about Elizabeth Specht the subject of the query. In naming all the children (or at least all those that are know) it may help in making a connection to a Specht family by naming convention.
